The Peace Dale Dinner Table is entering its 5th year and exists to provide healthy meals to children and their families, those who live alone, and the hungry.  Every Wednesday, between 4:30 and 6:00 P.M., our community is invited to eat a delicious home cooked meal in Peace Dale Congregational Church’s Fellowship Hall.  Volunteer chefs prepare and cook the food. Volunteer wait staff serves our guests, and members of the congregation provide transportation. There are approximately 60 meals served each week. There is no charge for the meal or transportation.

Jonnycake  Center Donation

Pictured here is Harvey Whitley, the Chair for the Wakefield Rotary Charitable Committee, and Kate Brewster, the Executive Director for the Jonnycake Center of Peace Dale. On November 29th Harvey presented Kate a check for $3,500.00 for the Johnnycake Center of Peace Dale

“Many children count on school for a healthy breakfast and lunch.  During school vacations, the cost of food for families can increase significantly.  To help ensure there is healthy food on the table during vacations, the Center provides a week’s worth of breakfast and lunch items for local children,” said Kate Brewster, executive director of the Jonnycake Center of Peace Dale.  “In order to ensure these items are healthy and include fresh fruit, whole grain cereal, milk, eggs, and healthy snacks, we must purchase most of the food we distribute.  Last year we provided enough food for 22,000 school vacation meals to local families,” said Brewster.

THE WHEEL; Please bear with while I figure out the publishing of The Wheel. Its a pretty steep learning curve! Russell Bertrand

Note on Rotary Minute:  This agenda item is typically about highlighting a Rotarian-related protocol or commemoration.  But club members are encouraged to share  an interesting, humorous, or unusual Rotary-anecdote about themselves, or fellow Rotarians.  This is more than a "happy buck" mention--you get to be on the agenda and you don't have to prep a 20-minute speaker's presentation.   Just let Pam know you want a Rotary Minute story to share.

Dr. Salloway to Speak on Sept 18, 2017

Posted by Frances Alexakos on Sep 06, 2017

the Rotary meeting on September 18 th will be held at 5:30  at the Holiday Inn, Rt. 1 in South Kingstown. the Speaker will be Doctor Salloway who runs the live volunteer multi-year Alzheimer Research study at Butler Hospital. He is chief of Neurology and Director of the Memory and Aging Program at Butler Hospital.

Alzheimer and Dementia (AD )is our # 1 public health problem. It is estimated that 125 million people will have dementia worldwide by 2050. Facing this unacceptable future, the US Congress has created a National Plan to fight Alzheimer’s with a major goal of developing breakthrough treatments by 2025. Advances in brain imaging and genetics allow us to detect changes in the brain many years before memory loss opening the era of Alzheimer’s prevention. Treatments are being developed to lower the plaques and tangles in the brain. Treatment breakthroughs will bring hope to dispel the fear and stigma associated with AD. To be successful we need hundreds of thousands of individuals who may be at risk to volunteer for prevention studies. This presentation will review the challenges we face and the options available to prevent Alzheimer’s disease.

If you have  questions regarding the Wakefield Rotary Club or on our speaker, please contact me by email alexakos249@gmail.com or by phone 401-474-6560.

COMMITTEE REPORTS

Vocational Service:  Service Above Self Scholarship recipient Emily McNeiece talked about her freshman year.

Charitable Committee: Co-Chair Marion Humphrey proposed two donation requests that were approved by the club's membership:

1. Boy Scout camp scholarships for boys in our area who need financial assistance - $1500.
2. One set of commercial coin-operated washer/ dryer stacked for use in Welcome House. The units are used by both shelter guests and night guests in the winter who stay at the Peace Dale Congregational Church. Laundry Systems - $2768.

Upon approval of laundry unit for Welcome House, Robin McGuigan suggested that the Charitable Committee post--signage and/or a Rotary logo--on or around the units so that Rotary's contribution to this convenience for clients of Welcome House is known.  Marion Humphrey said she'd report this suggestion back to the committee.

Board of Directors (BOD)- July 31st meeting - a few details.....
FOR CLUB APPROVAL:  The membership dues have been approved by the BOD and details are available on the website's Documents section under "2017-18 Membership Dues."  Please review the document and be prepared to vote on the dues amount for this term.  Here are the steps to access docs:  1) after logging-in, click on MEMBER AREA at the top of the page; 2) click on ORGANIZATION, among the top row of tabs; 3)  click on Documents, listed horizontally under the tabs.

BOARD MINUTES:  The minutes for this meeting, when finished, will be available, to members only, on the website's Documents section (see steps above for how to access docs).

MEETING TIME & PLACE:  The board recommends a new meeting time of Thursday breakfast--based on the the results of a committee survey* prepared and conducted during the last term.  The board will review information gathered about meeting places in the area (both restaurants & non-eatery venues) and make a final determination about the meeting time & location as soon as possible. The goal is to have the issue settled so that the new time will start the week of October 9th.  Please email Pam Ancheta--before the August 21st meeting-- if you care to suggest a meeting venue that might be easily overlooked, so it can be checked against the list of locations already considered.

*Around 80% of membership participated with approx. 45% voting that Thursday breakfast was a "good" meeting-time. But of those who said either "good" or "OK, but not first choice" the majority, around 69%, chose Thursday lunch--which may not be a popular time when it comes to recruiting new members.

TODAY'S PRESENTATION -  Ryan Doyle,  Outbound Exchange Student

Posted by Christine Pelton & Elizabeth Candas
Ryan Doyle, Senior, South Kingstown High School

Ryan spoke about her Rotary Exchange to Germany.  Our Club sponsored her as an outbound student in Exchange for our inbound student, Mint (Wipatsayaporn Tirapongprasert).  She is currently going into her senior year at SKHS.  Ryan left for her exchange adventure on August 1, 2016, and  spent her 10 months based in and around the town of Bremen, Germany.  She stayed with two families.  One was an older couple who didn't have their own children living in the house and they took Ryan sailing.  The other family living outside of town on a farm and had three children.  Ryan talked about all the bread she ate during her time away and claims all those carbohydrates took a toll on her body...she had a "healthy" diet of bread & butter.

Ryan was asked about how she knew about the Rotary Exchange program.  She mentioned being influenced by a casual conversation with Wakefield Rotary's past outbound exchange student from South Kingstown High School, Chapin Graham (currently attending George Washington University, Washington, D.C.).  Ryan thought it was such an interesting idea to be an exchange student she looked up Rotary Exchange and immediately began to fill out the application.  Even after her mother, Donna, had suggested researching the idea more thoroughly before committing to the Rotary program--Ryan refused and didn't even check out any other exchange option.

SPEAKER PRESENTATION - Jay Shartenberg - updated

Posted by Sandy Cutting & Pam Ancheta

Jay Shartenberg – Balloon Festival Committee

Final plans and instructions for this weekend's balloon festival.

Jay started with the weather forecast:  pretty good - mid to high 80s.  Then discussed the potential for field evacuation which Jay will lead the coordination on if it should be needed.  Jay also praised Cam Ennis for his great work on securing the professional balloonist for this year's fest and praised Judy Fortier for her work on volunteer coordination.

The professional balloonists versus the amateur balloonists:  the professionals will only do tethered rides - dawn (around 6am) & dusk (around 6pm)  unlike the amateurs there will be no untethered, free-flights.  Tickets for balloon rides will be sold at flight times.  Flight times will be (unless winds exceed 8 knots) Friday evening, Saturday dawn & dusk; Sunday dawn & dusk.

Tethered ride price is now $20/pp.  Set up for festival will start on Thursday, July 20th at 1pm with another set up shift starting at 8am Friday, July 21.  Set up must be finished by festival start at 4pm on Friday.  Breakdown of festival will start after 4pm on Sunday, July 23.

While "Rag Bag" activity is unlikely to take place because of severe tears in the balloon material, Dave Kring offered to set it up and give it try because--as Chris Pelton says--"it's such a hit."

Jay continued to talk about other attractions at the festival and Judy Fortier mentioned the shifts that need to be filled--especially ticket sales shifts during Friday evening and Saturday evening.  Thanks to everyone who signed up during today's meeting.

ADJOURNMENT

Pam Ancheta ended the meeting by reciting Rotary's 4-Way Test.  She would be remiss if she didn't acknowledge her failure to uphold the standard of the test at today's meeting by not allowing enough time for the Art Festival update agenda item.  So in an attempt to rectify the omission, Festival Chair Ed McLaughlin dutifully submitted requested notes for this newsletter to inform our membership.

Thank you, Ed, for the follow up and for your 5-years of service to the art fest and organizing a crucial fundraising program for our club.  Thanks to you, too, Co-Chair Beth Leconte!  Also a big thank you to Chris Hart for your technical help in setting up the art fest's online registration.  Many thanks to Herk & Sandy for taking on the fundraiser for next year!

NEXT WEEK, July 3 – NO MEETING “HAPPY JULY 4TH!!!"  START THE CELEBRATION EARLIER

COMMITTEE REPORTS - updated

--Filed Under “Old Business"/Charitable Committee:   A Matching District Grant for 2016-17 which our club's charitable committee budgeted $1,500 for was never submitted by our partnering applicant, The Chariho Club.  This was a very recent revelation.  Therefore, the Charitable Committee had a $1,500 surplus in its budget and took steps to use the money for our local needs.  The five organizations proposed to receiving $300 were:  Welcome House, Jonnycake, Habitat for Humanity, Galilee Mission, & Domestic Violence Resource Center.  Club membership voted to approve Charitable Committee's proposal to donate the monies to these 5 worthy organizations in our community.

--Meeting Time Committee: This committee submitted a report on a membership survey ranking meeting time options for our club's regular meetings. See attached:  Meeting Survey. With this new information, the process to change regular meeting times will be as follows:
  • on Monday, July 31st – the board will consider and take a vote on meeting times
  • on Monday, Aug. 7 - the board's decision will be voted on by membership
  • during the week of Oct. 9th – the new meeting time will be implemented

Rationale for starting the new schedule in October: 1-District Governor visit on Oct. 2 was first in August, then Oct. 30—don't want to mess with it again; 2- our great guest speakers committee (Jim Blackerby, Sandy Cutting, Fran Alexalos. Elizabeth Candas) have booked a couple months ahead--they're set until September.

--follow up on Narragansett Art Festival : (note:  the following are the written details from Art Fest Co-chair Ed McLaughin)
Many thanks to all club members for their assistance at the Narragansett Art Festival this past weekend.  After a bit of rain on Saturday morning, all was good when the sun showed up.

Thanks to Jay Shartenberg and team for the Friday layout; Ben Bardo for the PR efforts; Linda Hennessey for organizing the Rotarian volunteers; Beth Leconte for handling all the registration efforts and site layout; and a big Rotary thank you to Herk Herchenroether and Sandy Cutting for stepping up as our new co-chairs.

Final numbers still being work on, however, looks like at least $13,000 raised to support scholarships and club projects.

MEETING HIGHLIGHTS - updated

--follow up on Installation dinner @ Whalers Brewery, Peace Dale / June 22: See attached for installed officers. Mary Roda did a fantastic job of organizing the event considering it was not a traditional venue and the installation program was conducted in a...let's say a non private atmosphere. Thanks to Collin & Katrina who are the duo called Anamcara for providing the music and to “Turtle” our bartender. Along with Mary, thanks to Spencer Seitz, Jim Blackerby, and District Gov. Russ Bertrand for being such great ceremony presenters. Congratulations to the latest Paul Harris Award recipients including Elizabeth Candas and Spencer Seitz.  Congrats, also, to Steve White - District Award winner; Maureen White – Rotarian Spouse Award winner; Dave Kring - Rotarian of the Year. Thanks to President Pam Ancheta for ending her droning, pitchy, speech right at 7:30pm! Attachments:  Officers & Directors 2017-18

Please submit your photos/videos of the installation dinner to our main social media administrator: Deborah Casey, email: dc4of7@aol.com

2017-18 Proposed Budget vote: With no golf tournament fundraiser this year—which had been held for the past 3 years—this year's budget faced a $5,000 deficit compared to 2016-17. While the 2017-18 Administrative budget remains the same as 2016-17. The Charitable budget faced necessary reductions. So to maintain the same funding level as 2016-17 for the Charitable committee (l ine 5513) and International committee (line 5100), student of month (line 5611) was reduce from $1,500 to $500, and scholarship was reduced (line 5611) by $4,250. Also Rotaract (line 5711) was increased from $650 to $1,650. Some comments about the budget are attached.  After some intense discussion and questioning, the budget was approved by the membership, with a few members voting against. Of particular note was Lori Horton's clarification regarding the amount of funds and how those funds from Balloon Festival proceeds are released each fiscal year between immediate charitable distribution and investment for future charitable distribution through The Wakefield Foundation.

MEETING HIGHLIGHTS

Spencer said that the Time of Meeting survey has 71% of members voicing an opinion. More on this at another time.

The Club Budget was sent out by E-mail. A second mailing will be done.

Amani, our Rotarian friend from the Congo, gave us a 5 minute up-date on the amazing projects his club and his District are doing. He gave strong praise to our club for being involved and helping to get things going. His club received a grant from Rotary International to put in place 27 pure water taps, but by economizing and carefully watching expenses they were able to put in 52 water taps and allow 81,000 people from 10 neighboring countries to have pure water. The District recognized this project as the “most successful” at their annual conference. He also mentioned the “Congo Peace School” and the purchase of 50 acres by Rotary friends to give a new homestead for the relocated pygmys.

Spencer Seitz said that this is why we work at the balloon and art festivals, etc. to make things like Amani's projects possible.

Chris Pelton told us the tragic news that one of the Rotary Exchange Students from Thailand drowned off Cape Hatteras, NC. He was not part of our District, but the sadness was felt by all.

SPEAKER PRESENTATION

story thumbnail
Jim Blackerby introduced Dr. Charles Steinberg, president of the Pawtucket Red Sox, who gave a most interesting mostly biographical talk on his career in baseball. Though he collected only 2 hits in 2 years in little league his love for baseball has been a major part of his life for the past 41 years. In his senior year in a Baltimore high school he was able to intern with the Baltimore Orioles for one month in their PR work. He put together slides on the team and took them to 3 TV stations. He promoted the sale of T-shirts and giveaway bats. He was asked to come back the next summer. He worked on statistics with his boss, Earl Weaver. He followed his father into dentistry, hoping to be his own boss, and allowing him the opportunity to continue his love of baseball with the Orioles. Though initially against the new ballpark idea in Baltimore, he saw how the Camden Yards park rejuvenated the city. His then boss asked him to go with him to the San Diego Padres and again watch how a new stadium would enliven a big city.

Dr. Steinberg was part of persuading the Padres to grant 25 middle school students $5,000 scholarships to the college of their choice. It was important for him to reach those kids at a turning point in their lives and give them a goal and direction before moving in a negative life style. After Petco Park was constructed he moved back with his boss to Boston in 2002. The Red Sox organization provided $10,000 scholarships to middle school students.

Now that he is president of the Pawsox Red Sox organization he intends to see that $10,000 in scholarships are given out. Since their funds are quite limited, they will begin with 2 middle school scholarships, one from Pawtucket and one from Central Falls.

He believes that the Pawsox need to develop a good PR program that reaches each of RI's 39 cities and towns. He closed with a touching story about an 11 year old boy teary-eyed because he did not get Jason Varetek's autograph. The line was too long at a mall signing ceremony, and the 3 Red Sox players had to split up in order to get to another event in Conn. So, the Red Sox player who got to this boy was not the idol he was waiting to meet. Understanding the child's grief Dr. Steinberg personally walked the boy to the waiting bus, had him meet his idol, get the autograph. Two years later the boy's father, a Gulf Oil Co. exec., told Dr. S. that what he did changed his son's life. How could Gulf not reward the Red Sox in a large financial endorsement after what they had done for his son?

This award is the highest award given by District 7950! It is a 27 year tradition not to be taken lightly. All Clubs are asked to nominate one of their members. A panel of seven members determine the awardee and a DG or PDG is not eligible.  Congratulations Herb, we are all very proud of you, our fellow club member for receiving this honor.
