VISITING ROTARIAN AND GUEST INTRODUCTIONS
Today's speaker, our own Mary Roda, brought in "technical help" from Jess Kenyon who is also with the Domestic Violence Resource Center of South County.  And Assistant District Governor-Elect Chuck Sauer from East Greenwich Club was in attendance.  Dave Kring did the honors of introducing guests.
ROTARY MINUTE
No item presented at this meeting.

Note on Rotary Minute:  This agenda item is typically about highlighting a Rotarian-related protocol or commemoration.  But club members are encouraged to share  an interesting, humorous, or unusual Rotary-anecdote about themselves, or fellow Rotarians.  This is more than a "happy buck" mention--you get to be on the agenda and you don't have to prep a 20-minute speaker's presentation.   Just let Pam know you want a Rotary Minute story to share.

MEETING HIGHLIGHTS
Belmont Market Food Drive - URI Rotaract
Beth Leconte asked members to help transport the collected food to the Kingston campus to hold until the next morning of Saturday, March 24th, and help drive the food to Jonnycake Center when it opens.

Wine & Wonderful Fundraiser
Club members interested in registering for this fundraiser are asked to contact Pam Ancheta <voteintegrity@cox.net> by March 30th to see if we can manage a  table of 10 for $375...but if not:  individual tickets are $40 or with a special wine gift prize $65.  Click on the event under the Upcoming Events column in this newsletter.

Honoring Agnes Doody & 30 Years of Women in Rotary
for our Wakefield Club.  Beth Leconte agreed to coordinate details for the Women In Rotary project to be presented at this year's Districts Conference in Plymouth, MA, on May 18 - 20.  Beth Leconte is working on the possibility of an event/photo-opportunity with Wakefield's first female member: Agnes Doody, Ph.D., for this project.  Stay Tuned!

The project aims to to profile the first woman to join each Rotary Club throughout our District.  For a start,  information about this first female should include:  the name of the first woman to join your Rotary Club, date/year she joined, a head shot, position(s) she held in your club, and her current member status. If available, please send project chair, Lori DiPersio <lori@wrcnbc.org>, (401-578-5317) contact information of the "first woman". It would be great if the profile includes a few sentences describing first experiences in Rotary.

COMMITTEE REPORTS
REMINDER:  Community Service with Rotaract
Please volunteer to help with clean-up & repair YMCA's Camp Fuller in Wakefield with the Rotaracters on Saturday, April 7th from 9am-4pm. There will be 2 different 3-hr shifts with a lunch.  If you weren't at today's meeting, please contact Beth Leconte <olli_bleconte@uri.edu> to let her know on which shift (1st or 2nd...or both) you can help.

Wakefield Club's Community Service Committee
In response to a Rotary International goal, Harv Whitley is looking into tree planting service opportunities with Craig Hotchkiss of the RI Tree Council after receiving information from the East Greenwich club.  Also, Harv will investigate opportunities through the non-profit, Save The Bay.  Please contact Harv Whitley <hlwhitley@aol.com> if you're interested in being part of community service projects.

REMINDER: URI/Rotaract Advisory Team - Learn About How to Get Involved
The Rotaract Club needs an engaged and committed Rotary team to serve as Advisers.  It is important to work on this transition with Beth Leconte right now to facilitate as smooth a transition as possible.  Please contact Beth Leconte <olli_bleconte@uri.edu> to let her know you're interested and can see Beth after the Thursday, March 29th meeting to get briefed about being part of the advisory team.  So far the team includes Pam Ancheta and Jim Blackerby.

MEMBER NEWS
March is Spencer Martin's induction anniversary month.  He was Agnes Doody's sponsor into our club.
HAPPY BUCKS
Pam Ancheta -- paid an homage to Spencer Martin -- as March is his induction anniversary month -- who sponsored the first woman to join Wakefield Rotary in 1988:  Agnes Doody.

Gene Corl --  his grand-daughter and a couple of her friends did a C-SPAN interview program about addressing the opioid epidemic and they appeared in the local paper

Ben Bardo --  Referencing Herb Mansfield's rental car story from last week, Ben talked about his own rental car problem-story from when he was with his wife in Ireland renting a car having been already driven 180,000 miles and seemingly on the verge of overheating.  Also grateful that Russ Bertrand helped him get a new furnace for his home!

Jim Blackerby -- in  his recent travels to Thailand, he ended meeting our club's own Juila Yang in an airport as he awaited  flight on Cathay Pacific Airlines (small world).  Jim was traveling because he was at the wedding of his son to a Chinese woman who works for Bank of America.  Jim says that those attending the wedding were from all parts of the world and spoke over a dozen languages, "very UN experience" (also Yan Sun chimed in that Julia will be back stateside/perhaps back in Rhode Island(?) tomorrow)

Betsy Wisehart --  upon being awoke this morning by her 16-pound siamese cat sitting on her bladder, Betsy was happy to note that when she looked out the window it was great to see a "snow-less snow storm!"  And she's happy to be at Rotary and not slaving over taxes.

Joe Norris --  glad to be at today's meeting and grateful to all who stay in touch with him about how he's doing and his work status....Joe is considering all his options and hopes to make a decision soon that will keep him able to attend our Rotary meetngs (thanks, Joe!)

Yan Sun --  glad to be at today's meeting, too--because yesterday she had to deal with her two children home on a snow-day!

Beth Leconte --  glad to be back from her URI-alternate-spring-break trip to Arizona which she and three Rotaracters did as community service.  One of those students was Rotaract President Shannon McIsaac who also attended a Rotary meeting in Guatemala where she did her community service work.  Beth is also glad to announce that she and Glen will be picking up their puppy in New Hampshire this weekend....also Beth congratulated Glen on his impressive weight-loss and displayed a rotary button-down shirt that now doesn't fit Glen (the shirt is an extra-large with neck size 17" or 17-1/2")

Chuck Sauer, EG Rotary & Assist. Dist. Gov.-Elect -- was grateful for the Wine & Wonderful mention during the meeting and then made a pitch for our club members to consider being a RYLA "parent" at the upcome RYLA weekend in Brewster, MA, in May.  He told a wonderful story of his own experience as a "parent" about a young high school student showing empathy toward him after a RYLA conference activity.

Jim Buchanan -- paid his late fine & told everyone about a TV raffle, but not his own.  It is being run by the Greg Sweet owner of Koolco HVAC on Main Street; the raffle is for a 75" TV  and proceed benefit a local charity and the drawing will be held this Saturday at the Elks Club....for more details contact  Greg at Koolco, 476 Main Street Wakefield, RI 02879 / 401-783-1500

Glen Zibolis --  visited his daughter in Florida who earned a realtor award; Glen also attended her Rotary Club's polo event

Judy Fortier --  paid a "scooter-buck" and apologized to Mary Roda, today's speaker, for leaving early.  Then Judy reported a highlight from the recent balloon fest committee meeting:  Tarah Warner (Pawtuxet Valley Rotary Prez) our contracted sponsorship coordinator has so far raised $10,000 in sponsorship for this year's festival....Yeah!!!!

Steve White -- reiterated the fab news about Balloon Fest sponsorship and thanks Beth Leconte for all her work in setting up and being a support for the URI/Rotaract Club these past 5 years!  "Thanks, Beth!"

(Steve White's happy buck reminded Prez Pam Ancheta that Rotarians interested in learning to become the URI/Rotaract advisory team should meet with Beth at the end of the meeting.)
PRESENTATION -  Domestic Violence Resource Center of South County (DVRCSC)
Domestic Violence: Interpreting the Influence of Contemporary Cultural & Societal Forces
Mary Roda, Executive Director, Domestic Violence Resource Center of South County

Mary presented an examination of domestic violence incidents throughout our nation and state using statistical analysis showing the prevalence of these violent acts.  She referenced changing societal norms (gender equality and identity in the workplace); cultural awareness (the public scrutiny of victimhood among sexual harassment accusers and those accused); and political movements (association with political identities in social media and public rallies) and the causes and effects these aspects have on interpersonal and community relationships.  As a specific example of the insidious nature of mass media on the contemporary life of America's young adults, Mary played an easily accessible YouTube music video that used graphic actions and images to interpret a song from pop artist Maroon 5.

Please email Mary Roda <mroda@dvrcsc.org> to get answers to your questions about addressing domestic violence on a community and/or personal level.
