  • Betsy is collecting small toiletries such as shampoos and soaps from hotels to donate for patients who are veterans. Full size items are welcome also. Please bring in your toiletries next week. If you prefer to donate cash, you can write a check to Spencer Seitz.

  • The Veterans’ Day parade is Sunday, Nov. 11. If you want to march, meet at the Hazard School at 12:30. Volunteers are needed to help carry the flag, which has recently reappeared. Please sign up with Tom by Oct. 31

  • Thurs Nov 15,  Special Rotary Luncheon honoring our Vets with a special speaker.  Rotarians are asked to invite and sponsor the meal cost for the Vet.  If you wish to do so and don't not know a vet let Beth know and I will match you up with one.

  • The Rotary Foundation Dinner will be held on November 15 at the Rosebrook Event Center in Wareham, Mass. Our own Russell Bertrand will be the Master of Ceremonies. He is still looking for a few people to fill out the club table, so contact him if you are interested in attending.

  • Sat and Sun Nov 18 and 19th,  Volunteers needed to help with Mews Tavern Road Race and Easter Seals.  Saturday's work is usually handling late registrations, setting up auction items, and passing out T-shirts.  Sunday's work involves flagging on the roads, helping to serve food after the race and any projects Judy may have you run around and help.

  • The club Christmas party will be held on Friday, December 14 at Spain Restaurant. Tickets are $40 per person, available from Russell Bertrand. We need to get 60 people to have the entire upstairs to ourselves, so please invite family, friends, and prospective members.

Club Program

Todays speaker was Bruce Corlis who is the Dean of the Graduate School Of Oceanography at the University of RI.  Bruce discussed how the Graduate School of Oceanography contributes to the state as well as their students.  Growing Bluefin Tuna to minnow size and selling them to be farm raised, live transmissions from the research vessel Endeavor to schools and museums all over the world and attracting a billion dollars of grants over a ten year period are just a few of the campuses benefits.
Bruce discussed Prop 2 which is on next week’s ballot.  $45 of the $70 million requested in that proposition will go to support the URI Bay campus and GSO.  One of the big needs for funding is to raise and improve the dock for the new research vessel. The new vessel has a large forward loading capacity which the current dock cannot service and with anticipated sea level rises of 3-5 feet over the next 50 years the current dock will no longer be serviceable.
