Club Program
Todays speaker was Bruce Corlis who is the Dean of the Graduate School Of Oceanography at the University of RI. Bruce discussed how the Graduate School of Oceanography contributes to the state as well as their students. Growing Bluefin Tuna to minnow size and selling them to be farm raised, live transmissions from the research vessel Endeavor to schools and museums all over the world and attracting a billion dollars of grants over a ten year period are just a few of the campuses benefits.
Bruce discussed Prop 2 which is on next week’s ballot. $45 of the $70 million requested in that proposition will go to support the URI Bay campus and GSO. One of the big needs for funding is to raise and improve the dock for the new research vessel. The new vessel has a large forward loading capacity which the current dock cannot service and with anticipated sea level rises of 3-5 feet over the next 50 years the current dock will no longer be serviceable.
